IDMS Linux v4.0.0-2.6
IDMS Linux is a distribution targeted towards servers and experienced administrators. Although IDMS Linux has a gui interface and all the gui libraries, its discouraged to run a gui on a server due to the extra resource consumption. The first taste of non-gui power is the console based installer which uses RPM, this makes installing IDMS Linux a simple 5-15min job.
In the very beginning IDMS Linux was based roughly on Redhat Linux, since then its matured and transformed into its own unique flavour. IDMS Linux makes use of the RPM5 package manager, etcnet network configuration tool aswell as initng (in version 4.1+).
IDMS Linux is furthermore targeted primarily at power users, offering a unique preboot (initramfs) environment which can be further customized and used in many scenarios like emergency recovery or single file bootable remote installers.
Main Goals
Stability
They strive to provide a highly stable distribution suited for critical operations and high availability environments.
Security
Security, while going hand-in-hand with stability is also one of the main goals. They will make every effort to get critical security and operating system updates out as soon as possible.
Long term support
With the stability of Linux and extremely high uptimes, its very important for an installation to remain actively supported for a number of years.
Community involvement
They encourage community involvement, whether it be using the distribution, testing it or contributing in terms of development.
Secondary Goals
Commercial support
Apart from providing free support, they would also like to target large organizations with SLA agreements and support contracts. They plan to use the proceeds of these forms of support to employ core volunteers on a permanent basis (ie. job creation) to work full time on improving IDMS Linux. Among other things they plan this support to include customizing installations, packaging software and configuration assistance.
