6. Mandriva Linux One

Mandriva Linux One being an innovative and easy-to-use desktop Linux distribution represents a part of Mandriva Linux 2009 Spring release which is considered to be one of the most ground-breaking releases ever of Mandriva Linux. It has a lot of new enhancements, such as the improvement of boot performance (boot speed should be improved by 25% or more on most systems), full hardware support with many popular netbooks (including Asus Eee PC models, the Acer Aspire One, the MSI Wind) and so on.

In addition to the improved boot performance you will find the system shuts down, hibernates, suspends and resume very fast. Among the other important features of given release the following ones should be mentioned: a lot of new software is included, significant improvement of Mandriva Security Center, better 3G support, reduced memory footprint, the ability to edit global network settings, new features of Mandriva Installer and etc.

Finally I would like to emphasize that there are a lot of different Linux distributions to choose from; still the abovementioned being the most popular distributions are the best ones to start with. Moreover before you choose one of them, I would suggest you to learn more about KDE and GNOME, which represent two main desktop environments used in Linux distributions. Generally for Windows users it’s considered to be easier to adapt to GNOME that KDE, however if you would like to check something new, you can download the version with KDE instead.

Another important thing that should be mentioned is that some of the distributions (Fedora 11, Ubuntu 9.04, Linux Mint 7 and others) have Live USB versions, which are closely related to Live CDs, but have some important distinctive features. The most important feature of Live USB consists in the fact that the data contained on it can be changed and additional data stored. This allows for live USBs to be used as personal storage, as it allows a user to carry their preferred operating system, applications, and configuration as well as personal files with them, making it easy to share a single system between multiple users.

Hopefully you will find this review useful enough while making the final decision about the version you are going to try out.
