1. Ubuntu 9.04

It’s not an exaggeration to say that at the moment Ubuntu represents the most popular Linux distribution. The main reasons for that probably are its simplicity and presence of all the applications you may need, from word processing and email applications, to web server software and programming tools. As the others distributions it is and always will be free of charge. You do not have to pay any fees. You can download, use and share Ubuntu with your friends, family, school or business for absolutely nothing.

The developers issue new release of Ubuntu versions (in fact there are a lot of them, including: Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu, Gobuntu and etc.) every six months – in April and October. Thus you always have the latest and greatest applications that the open source world has to offer.

In addition to that I would recommend you to learn more about Wubi – is an officially supported Ubuntu installer for Windows users that allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu as any other Windows application, in a simple and safe way. You can consider it as an alternative to Live CD.

2. OpenSUSE 11.1

OpenSUSE 11.1 is another great Linux distribution representing a community project sponsored by Novell. It gives Linux developers and enthusiasts everything they need to get started with Linux. The major goal of given project is to make it the easiest Linux distribution for anyone to obtain and the most widely used open source platform. As a consequence, OpenSUSE dramatically simplifies and opens the development and packaging processes, thus contributing to becoming the platform of choice for Linux hackers and application developers.

As regards the main characteristic features of the given distributions, here are the most important ones:

  • Great productivity and multimedia: OpenSUSE 11.1 contains upgraded versions of all key desktop applications (OpenOffice.org, Mozilla Firefox, Novell Evolution email and calendaring, and etc.)
  • Simplified connection management: it includes key NetworkManager enhancements and much broader support for wireless connectivity. A fully redesigned connection manager allows you to customize your wireless connection, VPN settings and 3G connection settings.

3. Fedora 11

Fedora 11 represents a Linux-based operating system providing users with access to the latest free and open source software, in a stable, secure and easy to manage form. It should be mentioned that Fedora is more than just software – it is a community of contributors from around the world who work with each other to advance the interests of the free culture movement and have a mission to lead the advancement of free and open source software and content.

The nice thing about Fedora is that it often gets the latest software before anybody else, because of being close to upstream development teams. At the same time it’s very easy for the individuals to create their own distribution, thanks to Fedora’s easy remixing tools. With the help of these tools you can quickly select the package you need, and create live images for CD/DVD or USB.

To understand how powerful this distribution is, you can simply check the lists of Fedora’s users. Here it is:

  • Linus Torvalds, the creator and primary maintainer of Linux
  • NASA systems
  • Over a hundred derived distributions including Red Hat Enterprise Linux and OLPC
  • Roadrunner, the number one Supercomputer in the world
  • Some robots
  • Millions of other users

Now let’s take a look at the screenshots I made while trying Fedora 11 Live CD:
