Gibraltar v3.0
With immediate effect, they are deploying the new Gibraltar version 3.0.
The main highlights in the new version are full integration of IPv6, support for multiple Internet connections, and simpler deployment and configuration of VPN clients. Gibraltar is now able to switch between different Internet connections in the case of provider failures and to use multiple connections in parallel for load-balancing.
Gibraltar is one of the first security products providing full IPv6 support. This includes full support in terms of routing and firewalling, as well as support in most integrated application level proxies such as the anti-virus and anti-spam mail filter or the secure DNS resolver. For tunneling IPv6 addresses inside existing IPv4 connectivity, the established tunneling techniques 6to4 and 6in4 are supported. Adding globally reachable IPv6 addresses to a local network is now a very simple procedure with automatic IPv6 address prefix setup and auto-configuration of internal machines – even if the local Internet provider does not yet support it natively.
High availability using multiple Internet connections
Nowadays, permanent availability of Internet connectivity is getting more and more important not only for large enterprises. With its new policy-based routing features, Gibraltar provides administrators with the right set of important tools. In case of a connection failure, Gibraltar is now able to switch between several Internet connections (fail-over).
In addition, Internet traffic can be distributed over several different connections in parallel (load-balancing).
In addition to these main improvements, Gibraltar now uses Linux 2.6 kernels and supports all compatible WLAN network interface cards. This allows to run Gibraltar as a high-security WLAN access point (WPA2) which can be combined with the integrated captive portal solution for authenticating network guests: An ideal solution for building private WLAN hot-spots.
Using the integrated LDAP user directory or combining Gibraltar with a Microsoft Active Directory significantly simplifies configuration of client VPN users based on the SSL-based OpenVPN. Client software is available for all current operating systems as open source software.
