How to capture non browser http traffic

Today I had to inspect what traffic does a program create. For browser traffic I usually use Fiddler (it’s free and it does the job). But it doesn’t suit for a software that doesn’t use proxies. So I had to find the solution, how to capture packets sent by my program (i don’t have any sources for the program so I cannot determine what traffic it should create).

I’ve tried many programs for that, but the solution that worked was Packetyzer. It doesn’t matter that most recent version is about 5 years old – it works great under Windows 7.

In order to get it working I downloaded the program binary (you can find the link above) and installed it. The program didn’t start at its first run, so I had to install another software named Winpcap. I’ve used default settings for both programs so there are no tricks for this installation.

To start capturing the traffic you need to start Packetyzer. It asks for a new session – check “Automatic scrolling” and click “OK”.

Then choose Session->Start Capture

You’re done. Every packet that goes through your network interface will now be shown in Packetyzer.

Description of Hesk - a free support suite written in php and mysql

If you need to communicate with your customers to solve their problems, you definitely need a help desk. A place, where all most popular questions are answered and users have the ability to ask if anything remains unclear. If you are running a service, a web hosting, or anything else related to a big number of potential customers, help desk software will make it easier to communicate with them.

There are lots of help desk scripts available on the web. Everything depends on your current needs; if you’re installing it for the first time, you should better choose a free or open source solution. Here is a big list of software to choose from, but I will tell you a little about the script I really like. It’s Hesk.

IMHO, it’s a great script for a beginner and for a pro. Interface is very clear and you don’t even need a documentation, as it’s hard to do anything wrong with this script. Take a look at a screenshot:

Let’s find out what are the features:

Customer Interface:

    * Submit new tickets
* Attach files
* Obtain detailed information from customers with custom fields
* SPAM prevention
* Suggest related articles before final ticket submission
* View existing ticket status
* E-mail notifications of staff replies
* Browse knowledge base

Knowledge base:

    * Unlimited knowledge base articles
* Unlimited categories and subcategories
* Quick and Easy search capabilities
* Post attachments to articles
* Count article views
* List newest and most popular articles
* Rate articles

Administrator interface:

    * Unlimited administrators and staff accounts
* Restricted access to some functionality for certain staff
* Powerful ticket search ability
* Manage knowledge base categories and articles
* Manage staff accounts
* Manage canned responses
* Customize help desk settings
* Modify your profiles and signatures
* Autoclose tickets after X days
* E-mail notifications of new tickets and replies
* Easy translation into any language

You are welcome to download your free version.

If you can propose any other simple and free scripts, please, post them in comments.

If you manage many sites that take profits from Adsense advertising, then you probably know that irrelevant ads are often shown on your pages. This means your visitors won’t click on them and you are simply losing your profits. I have discovered the software that allows to filter these ads by advertisers, as if you’re running a niche site, the advertiser selection isn’t so great. Software I’m talikng about is AdSense Preview Tool . Let me list all the features annonuced:

grouping of websites and URLs;

flexible geo-targeting settings;

automatic checking of advertisers’ websites;

ads separation: normal, non-relevant and MFA;

sorting of the filter items by an actuality;

automatic deletion of old filter items.

There is a free trial available on the site. You’re welcome to try it by yourself, but I think that this software is worth its money.

As you know there is a nice Windows software for SSH access named Winscp. It’s a FTP and SFTP client that allows to have multiple accounts and I consider it to be great for SFTP connection. I’ve tried Globalscape CuteFTP Professional, but it doesn’t work with SFTP in the way I like. Also I’ve had some problems saving files that’s why I have switched to Winscp.

In the default setting of this software you will receive timeouts as no commands are sent to keep the connection alive. There is a simple setting that allows to fix this issue and have a permananent connection to yor servers. Let’s see, as the screenshots are provided as usual.

That’s the main window of Winscp. As you see I’ve got many server sessions (IPs are hidden for security reasons). In order to do what we need you have to tick “Advanced Options” checkbox.

Then we need to go to the connection tab.

Default option is Off (we’re looking at keepalive section). In order to prevent timeouts you have to check any option for Keepalives except off. I’ve chosen to send dummy commands.

Then just save your session and you will never lose your connection amymore.

Today one of my friends told me that he had installed Google Chrome and he’s very satisfied with its speed. I already knew about this browser and that was a chance to try it. I have downloaded and installed Google Chrome for Windows and here are my first impressions.

First of all. you should download a launcher that will download the whole installation package. Seems to be nice for those with a good Internet connection, but… I like to have all my installation packages stored on my hard drive so I could share them with my friends. But that’s Google and I think there are some reasons for such a strategy.

After Google Chrome is downloaded and installed, it will ask you to import your bookmarks and settings from Mozilla Firefox (it’s my main browser). After everything is done, the main window is started and shortcuts are added anywhere it is possible with no option to skip this step. Here is how main window looks:

I have somewhere seen the “Most Visited” panel, didn’t you?

Let’s go further: tab interface does not bring anything new. Tabs are located at the top and I didn’t find any option to move them to any other part. It is not so easy to customize Chrome at the moment, but I think this will be fixed in an official release of this browser.

Pages look very nice, for example, my blog looks like this:

My first impression is that Chrome has too few settings. At the moment it cannot be compared to Opera or Firefox: the number of possible tweaks is significantly lower than in each of these browsers. Here comes the settings window of Chrome:

Usual Firefox settings with Google as default search engine. Nothing interesting and nothing special.

Minor tweaks are too minor: there are just some options that are related to paths and fonts.

Under the hood there are some options too. Too simple settings that could be found in any modern browser.

I used to perform mouse gestures while browsing (thanks to Opera). No plugins for this can be found at the moment and I won’t move to Chrome while this is not possible to do. My password manager completely ignores Google Chrome that’s why I won’t use it until its support is added. About the speed… well, I’ve got a 4096 kbit connection and page load speed is almost the same in all the browsers I have. I think the speed parameter will matter only on a low speed internet and even Opera, whose slogan was “The fastest Browser on Earth”, does not promote it any more: internet became much faster.

I’d like to say that I’ve expected much more from this browser. I’ve found no new features, no plugins and no real advantages, maybe because it’s beta. We’ll be waiting for a complete release. Until then Opera, Firefox and Internet Explorer are your friends, if you’re on Windows

Today I’ll tell you about an excellent software that allows to create any kind of info backups. That’s greatly important as you will be able to restore anything you like in just minutes. For example, if you have installed a fresh copy of Microsoft Windows, you know how much time it takes among with software setup. Acronis True Image Home will revert your system to the tuned condition in just minutes. I’ve got a Russian version that’s why I won’t post any screenshots here.

Acronis true image Home is a powerful software that allows you to deal with any kind of data backup. It comes with scheduler so you won’t even need to create your backups manually – you will just have to keep your backups in a safe place. The rest is done with this software – I consider it’s more useful than Norton Ghost (I’ve used it for some time).

Acronis True Image Home also comes with secure file shredder – you can now safely delete your files. You can also Protect your privacy by cleaning up your activity track stored by Windows.

I suggest you to download and install this software. I think you will be impressed with all the features it has and I think it’s worth its money

Even if I don’t like Ajax and Javascript tools, that often overload sites, I consider having site screenshots is a very good idea. But… where to take these shots and how to do them? If you try to do this manually, you’ll have to press print screen, then to run paint, then save the image, then rename it… Hard work, isn’t it?

If you want this for one site and want to see what’s shown to user in different browsers, then browsershots.org will be great for you. This service allows to take screenshots with different browser – this is the most comprehensive tool related to page screens I’ve seen on the Web.

There is also a Windows software that allows to do this. It’s Thumbnail Grabber. Thumbnail Grabber is a free utility for creating thumbnail screenshots of web pages in JPEG format. You can choose web page size (width and height) and thumbnail image size (in percent of the web page size). The program can batch process URLs and domains from a text file that makes it extremely useful for sites that have reviews or galleries, etc.

Now the process of Image creation is very simple. All you have to do is to have a list of web pages to crawl and Thumbnail Grabber will do everything for you. Nice that it doesn’t capture any browser elements, so your screenshots are clear and look great

Seoquake is a browser extension that allows you to monitor multiple parameters that are important for search engine optimization. It doesn’t do anything extraordinary, but the information is presented pretty well. Google, Yahoo and Live.com indexation, number of pages in each search engine, Alexa Rank and other parameters. It is fully customizable: you may tune almost all features that Seoquake has. Here is how it looks like:

Just try it and I’m sure you’ll find it useful. You may get it here. Plugin is often updated so it will be working even after any SERP changes.

If you often need to know Pagerank of web pages you visit you might use Firefox with Google Toolbar, The same toolbar for IE, or Firefox Plugins like Seoquake. But if your browser is Opera there is a solution for Pagerank viewing. It is Opera Pagerank button. This is a piece of javascript code for Opera that queries Google toolbar service for Pagerank and displays it. Here is how it looks like:

Pagerank results are displayed in a small window that pops up in the top left corner of Opera. Note that this button will not work if JavaScript is turned off. You may place the button anywhere you want, I prefer to put it near the address bar.

I’ve seen some new widgets for Opera, but this one seems to work more stable. Note, that Google has limits on number of toolbar queries per IP per day, but if you just use browser I don’t think you can reach this limit.

Today I’ve checked for Opera updates and found there is an update – version 9.50 has been finally released. I’ve been using 9.50 beta for about a month and was unsatisfied with some features, especially I was unable to add Webmoney keeper Light as Opera told me it is not enough secure. But today I found a new Opera and tried to install it.

Even the installation window changed to futuristic one. Then I was proposed to upgrade my existing installation and I did it. When I started the updated version, I’ve noticed that my tabs that were opened before the installation were not saved, so be careful to do it before upgrading. Bookmarks and other stuff were saved as usual.

I was a little shocked with interface. Here it is:

I didn’t like bookmark folder icons and black tab panel – I think I’ll have to search for some skins that will revert Opera interface to the usual one. New icons are quite beautiful but I think I need some time to get acquainted to it.

It’s a pity that Opera does not support my password manager, Sticky Password. I had to change my default browser to Firefox but I hope to revert back to Opera when the support is realized. I think it’s one of the most secure browsers and I really recommend it to all users, Linux and Windows.
